Ok, so this was just begging to happen - Since I started riding with you guys I've been dying to ride the Rock n Roll route, and finally the chance came last Thursday, so I guess it's only appropriate that I write the ride report (nope, it has nothing to do with the classic rut wipe-out that I had, nothing at all…..).
So there were about 20 of us (probably more like 10, but when there are so many lekker people to chat to on the ride it feels like way more) with Hardy leading and Deekay volunteering to sweep, and at least four of us that were RnR newbies. We left in high spirits, especially as Hilgard promised a round of drinks for delaying our departure a little. A pity he later qualified the promise with an expiry date too. I should have read the omens – broken light bracket in the parking lot, almost not making the ride due to an urge to change tires and bike frame on Thursday afternoon, but no, I wasn’t easily going to miss out on a RnR ride again after managing that for so long. And so we were off. Since I am barely familiar with night riding, all I can say about the RnR route Hardy chose was that it was great. I heard all sorts of names for sections of the track we rode, some of which I believe include vetseun, BeegDipper (or big dumper, if that’s where I lost my bike), Cornwall Downhill rush, Smuts Downhill, look-ma-no-brakes , quad busta, python (or mamba), and so on… Luck even tried to make one of the downhill sections a ghost ride, hence the report being written here, as I discovered my new NiMH headlamp batteries were not good for more than two DnD rides yet (no problem since I always have a lamp on the handlebar….). There were tons of speed zones, tons of singletrack sections, and generally just a great ride was had. It certainly looks as if any cobwebs anyone may have built up over winter were certainly shaken off, and QT and Deleen were often seen showing the lads how it’s done up the hills later in the ride. The speed zones included “light at the end of the $#%#$%##$%@ tunnel” – jeeezzzz, that thing gets longer every time, especially when Stealth is playing the “catch me if you can” on that rough stuff with his hardtail. There was a point were we debated renaming Stealth to “silhouette” or “ruiter in swart” or something, as on more than one occasion only his silhouette could be seen up ahead as the rest of us tried to keep going in our version of a speed zone. At some point I again felt the need to demonstrate the virtues of a tubeless system by taking out my brand new Conti Race King’s sidewall with a piece of beer bottle glass (sorry, couldn't find a dropper nearby - thanks Stans & gators for a quick fix. Ride stats (approx): Smileage 32km Total time 3:30 Punctures 2 crashes 1 (I think) temp - perfect Thanks to all you gyus for the great ride and great social.
