At the Dark&Dirty there is a custom that the ride report is to be written by
first person to take a fall. So here I am typing away over my second cup of
boeretroos for the day… I must admit though, I could not have achieved this
honour without a little help from my friend and our little game of trying to
push the other off the road. As I was going down with Thursia and her bike
rolling over me, my mother’s words echoed in my head - “*this is going to
end in tears with somebody getting hurt*” – which is what she always used to
say when I was a lad playing rough boyish games with my brothers. Well at
least there were no tears, rather fits of laughter to go with the bruised
elbows.

So, after a fun canoe time trial on Rietvlei Dam, while most normal people
were going home to take a shower and settle down for the evening, I lined
up with a group of other not-so-normal mountain bikers at the Moo Mall’s
parking lot. I never did a head count, but we must have been between 20 and
30 riders. What a turnout!

The weather was perfect and our route for the evening was pretty straight
forward. We basically followed the R21 east for approximately 17 kilometers
before turning back west with a fair share of single track and jeep track
between the faster gravel road sections. Being a “mild to wild” ride, there
were lots of time for socializing on the ride and after about an hour and
15km’s, out came the cup cakes and lollipops… it was Chris’s birthday and
there we were somewhere in the dark singing away “*happy birthday dear
Chris… happy birthday to you!*”.

Talking about singing, two new composers came forward last night with a new
club song. I am not really sure where the song is to be sung in the future,
but I think Adri and Thursia intends to sing it to us at every club event.
I can’t remember how the words go, but it is something about making new
acquaintances on the D&D rides and going low with a hyhohyho and off we go!
Adri, Thursia, maybe you can help me out a bit here?

There were quite a few first timers on the ride. Dorette being a newly
converted roady and this being only her second time on a mtb, did pretty
well and was one of the few people who didn’t take a tumble. Coenie's
gamble to ride without a light on his first D&D (well, actually he did have
a light, but it went dead after about 10 minutes) resulted in him buying a
few pieces of land along the route and obtaining a few bruises to show off
to his wife back home. What's that saying - *pain heals, chicks dig scars
and glory last forever!*

The race was on at the two speed zones for the evening with Hennie
triumphing at the first and “the young bloke with the blue shirt” at the
second (sorry, I didn’t get your name). The rest of the ride was rather
mild with Hardy keeping the group together and future events being
discussed. A few events that was mentioned was the club race in March, the
Diamond Dash, War Trail and Swazi Xtreme. Wow, it is really inspiring to
cycle with people with so much energy!

Back at Irene Mall at about 22:30, the staff at Spur made my day by
re-opening the kitchen and preparing the best biltong and cheese burgers I
have had for a long time.

Thanks Hardy and everyone else for a great ride. See you there next time.
