Ok, since no-one except Nico saw me wipe I expect this ride report comes as quite a surprise, to most. Anyhow, this simply serves no warn you that using both hands to wave goodbye to mates with broken bones whilst turning your MTB is unhealthy.
Nevertheless, the smash report, er, I mean ride report: The lovely autumn evening summoned quite a number of DnDers, and even extracted a few newbies from their homes for their inaugural DnD, even though it was planned to be a Rock n Roll ride, famous for its rocky climbs and fast, sometimes gnarly descents. Hardy obviously comes from one of those tribes that believes you give presents on your birthday rather than receiving, as he gave us the most awesome RnR ride with the most amazing single track, bush bash, downhill rides on water runoffs, etc, and of course he ordered perfect weather for the ride too. The fact that I'd hardly slept the previous night seemed irrelevant as the adrenalin and endorphins kept my going, even when my jaw started hurting from smiling too much. Having departed from Moo Mall just after 7, we all charged off into the bush to start the ride with a great warmup when disaster struck: Mike tried to ride over a rabbit, which promptly dived into its hovel. Apparently Mike's bike wheel "don't go there", so Mike went over the 'bars and managed to shred his collarbone. Luckily QT could come to the rescue, and with some superglue managed to...er..damn, what did she do? Oh yes, she took him to hospital. Then the first of two strange things happened: firstly, after all was loaded up we somehow had one more MTB wheel than there was need for. No breaking QT's speed, she relieved us of that too, and off they went. I say them, 'cos that's when I applied in dirt to write the ride report, Mike having wangled his way out of it with some lame excuse of not having anything to report on at the hospital;. Once on the way again, we all proceeded to feel sorry for Mike and tried in varied and innumerous ways to ride over any rabbits we encountered. Although I never say another rabbit, I certainly say a number of wipes, jeez, I think we'll need to start charging people to write the report there were so many takers! Since I never really take note of the track names we ride, all I can report is that we rode a lot of old favourites and then s few new ones as well, thanks to the birthday boy's free-giving nature. The one that certainly does stick out though has to be Mamba = woah that was good! The traditional stop on the Waterkloof Airbase hill was made to consume muffins, champaigne, and sing the usuals to Hardy. Except that QT had a trick or two up her sleeve - Helium-filled balloons that I am still convinced also contained some other drug that definitely made a few tongs wag - even oupa Gert got to deliver a brief, if rather shrill, serenade to the hardman, much to everyone's delight. The gist - an awesome ride, awesome company and a lot of smileage done: Ride stats: Heads: 22, including 3 newbies (Welcome lads!) Smileage: 25kmx(22-2) = 500!!!! Wipeouts: any one wager a guess??? Broken Bones: 1 in 50 places Bikes trashed: None this week, think the riders took all the knocks! Even though I'll be pedaling down the drakensburg for 9 days I'm sad to be missing out on the next 2 DnD's - these are just too much fun. Hardy, Nico, and all you guys - thanks for an incredible ride. And of course a special thanks to Ms Ferrari for getting my butt into gear and off to DnD, after a long night I was trying hard to convince myself to have an early night, after all, DnD is "just" a social ride. Imagine if I'd missed this one! Get well soon, Mike. And you too, QT, was great seeing you on Thursday but we miss your wooping and chatting along the trail.
