After rushing home from Sandton to go and fix my light I only pulled into
the parking area at 18:45 . Now this for me is late . However there were
no bikes to be seen and I started to look for a calendar just to check
that is actually Thursday . As my search was about to get very serious I
saw Dee-Kay pulling in and knew that all will be alright now .
Of late I have not attended many D&D rides so I will not be using a lot of
names , mostly “that dude” or “this chick” . I therefore apologize
beforehand to the two chicks that did attend the ride . I use the word
chick as a term of endearment and not because I actually think you are
chickens .
It was a bit chilly but not really very cold when we started . I got a
bit worried that I maybe a bit overdressed as I did take the bold move to
wear socks that evening . 16 of us (some people said it was 17 when we
started) made our way to the dirt . About 50 meters away I could feel my
back rim hitting every little rock in the road . Because I thought I am
going to be late I just grab the first bike the I found in the bike room .
The Hard tail does not see the outside of that room a lot and the tire
was running at around .5 . I decided to just be careful till the next stop
and then give it a quick pomp . Since nobody had a puncture or fall the
misfortune of writing a report fell on me for having a pomp .
The ride was very uneventful but a lot of fun . We went onto trails that I
have not done in years and Ecstasy Park was as exciting as I remembered it
. WE had a few loops clockwise and then a few the other way before
heading for the gate again . A few speed zones followed and I think Hardy
won one and some other faster than me dudes won the others . Racing up
the Quad buster really made my lungs burn but I think it was from the
cold air , not the Gunston plains .
Some more fast riding down beautiful single track followed . My light was
fading fast and I could not go to fast . Now that I am talking about
light I think those dudes that had to change lights at some stage should
have written this report !!
Our last push for home took us to the bottom of Cornwall hill . I have
never gone up there before , uphill’s scare me , but found it to be easier
than I thought it would be . BUT LULU (who happens to be a chick) politely
informed me that we did the easy part of the hill , there is apparently a
bit that is about 25 degrees gradient we cut out or missed .
After a quick chat and hot chocolate it was time to head home . When you
don’t do night rides for long periods and you do eventually return , you
ask yourself “Why have I missed so many rides ? “ It is really a sin that
we have to work !!!
