Which ride Phillip reported on, I don't know, but it certainly was not the
one of Thursday, May 26, 2011. Having missed two D&D rides in a row, I was
looking forward to this one. The real cold of winter had arrived, but I was
not expecting to find a Moo Mall parking lot void of mountain bikes. A
little later Willem came along by MTB and the two of us kept on waiting for
the late comers. At ten past seven we decided that no one else was going to
come along. What is the problem? Have they grown softto be scared of a
little cold?

Willem obviously was not scared of riding alone having done the trip from
home and as a relatively newcomer he fortunately was not aware of the rule
of at least five riders for safety reasons. Instead of pointing out the rule
I suggested we do a ride staying next to busy roads. So we set off along Van
Ryneveld Avenue, Kierieklapper, Cliff Avenue and then Hans Strijdom Drive
all the way to Garsfontein Road. De Villebois Mareuil Drive proved to be a
worthy climb for hill training and on Piering Road we could recover to enjoy
the downhill of Boeing Street back to the mall which we reached at 21h30
having done 27 Kms from where Willem refused my offer to take him home and
took on the night sole again.

No the most interesting of rides, but at least I got my fix and it was not
bad at all. Hopefully this report will inspire the rest of the riders to
show again. It is not really that cold if you dress well and remember the
old trick to wear a plastic bag between two socks to keep your toes from
freezing.
