Pre-amble: Carine, it did happen; here is the report :)

June 21. That is the longest night of the year and at 19h00 it was quite
dark. And windy. That was perhaps the reason that only five riders were
somewhat undecided between the ride and a hot chocolate at Spur. In the end
the ride won with Hardy leading followed by newbie Tommy, Herman, Mark and
me sweeping to avoid being spotted when the inevitable happens.

Reaching the top of Cruiser, we were quite warmed up despite the somewhat
icy wind. The first light incident happened soon after we started the track
down to Big Dipper. My home made light started bobbing all over the place
and on closer inspection it was revealed that the ring keeping the lamp
with the bulb in place had been lost. Going back to find it proved to be
fruitless and Mark donated a cable tie to keep the light more or less in
one piece. That proved to be a good solution that lasted for the entire
ride.

Everything went fine doing Big Dipper, Wash-and-Go and Python. Then Hardy
decided to take a shortcut to Holy Trail and I missed most of the trail if
there was one at all, bumping over rocks and other obstacles. After doing
half of Holy Trail going up, it was decision time and Hardy presented the
options: Men, mouse or just chillers. Herman made the choice for us: Men.
So we went up Frikkin Woof. "Went" is the correct word; none of us rode it
all the way up. Then we were on the rocky part of the Track that Eric shall
name and there I did a very graceful sit-down when stopped by a rock. Note
that I was not spotted, but my light episodes earned me the right to do
this Light report. Episodes? We'll get to that...

Tar road to Bat Tunnel followed by the road that might have been tarred at
some distant time and the climb up to the sub-station. Catching our breaths
near the top I discovered that my backup light was on my handlebar no more,
so we went back on our tracks and Hardy spotted it just after Bat Tunnel.
We went back back via Bat Tunnel for the third time, Blair witch, Shebeen
Queen and the lower half of the Mieliemuur.

Thanks to the riders for yet another enjoyable ride end especially to Hardy
without whom it is just not the same.

Oupa Gert.
