To: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> Maybe it's the cold ... Before Ride to Rhodes I was very worried about the cold. I spent some money on warm clothes and socks and snow gloves and buffs and beanies and what not. I got a little two days before my starting date. I ended up not riding all the days. But the days I did ride the mornings were fairly cold and as soon as the sun came out the days would warm up nicely. So the last day I wasn't too worried about packing extra warm clothes. I had First Ascent's mtb gloves on with those inners, a sleeveless vest , long sleeve shirt, bibs, normal tights and a wind jacket. On my feet , thin socks, plastic bags in the middle and some snow socks over that. Oh and I had a FA skull beanie on. In all not a lot of extra warm clothes. We stared our ride at 5am and like the other mornings it was cold , but as soon as you start to peddle we would warm up. After 8km ride, we started climbing the mountain carrying our bikes. Still the weather was not that bad - even though we were surrounded with other mountains with snow on them ... After about a 3hr hike a bike we got to some snow. And then it was cold. And keeping momentum was key. Ankle deep in snow I slipped and fell and lost sight of the others in front of me. Not wanting to stand still and waiting for the ones behind me I kept going in a direction that felt right . I was lucky. I regained sight of the guys that new where they were going. Marked the spot and when I came closer I could see tracks in the snow. I'm sure by then it was well below zero. Misty. I got on a road - still following the tracks in the snow and mud. Relief . I made it to coffee stop! After coffee and a toasted sandwich I took off my soaking wet wind jacket and put on a thin rain jacket I always keep in my back pack. We still had some 30km+ to get to Rhodes. I got on my bike and was not sure what to expect. Rain, snow and a lot of mud and mist, we got. Some 3hr to do 30km in those conditions. My body was okay , but the fingers took a beating. The wind started to pick up and at some point I remember thinking " at what point does frostbite set in ...?" Few km outside of Rhodes I had to slow down - cattle blocking the road... Freezing. Made it through the cattle got a lot more thick mud and then I saw the 80 and then the 60 and then 40 and one more turn and I was in town.... Made it !!! I grew up in Pretoria - what do I know about mountains and snow ? I survived that. I will not soon forget that day. A memory I'm putting in the bank - to take out on another day I'm faced with fear. What I'm trying to say : Don't let the fear of being cold rob you of and awesome adventure.
