There are many options for around R3000-R4000.

The R4000 option will have hydraulic disk brakes and a Suntour XC shock,
and the previous 9 speed Deore groupset (called Alivio now I think). The
shock will struggle if he's a big guy. I have used my daughter's bike for
several rides so far (typically with another friend on my GT), and it's OK
so long I don't gun it over rocky terrain. I got my daughters the
Silverback Saturn bikes almost 2 years ago and the new breed of entry level
bikes is about the same. I dunno what they go for now...

At the bottom of the scale is the 7 or 8 speed shifters but then it'll be
around R3000 with no-name brand hydraulics... still a good beginner's bike
in my opinion.

Check out Solomon's! They have a newish shop in Lynnwood road as well.

For R2k you'll get a school bike.
