Orienteering Event at Garstkloof Nature Area Social/Training Event - Saturday 5th October 2013 Score Middle Distance What is Orienteering Orienteering is a competitive form of land navigation. It is for all ages and degrees of fitness and skill. It provides the suspense and excitement of a treasure hunt. The object of orienteering is to locate control points by using a map and compass to navigate through the area. Directions to the Event Centre >From the R21 highway: take Nelmapius Drive exit, turn east and travel past Rietvlei Dam. At the T-Junction with Delmas Road (R50), turn left. Continue for 2.9km. At the traffic light turn right into Barnard road. At the first intersection, turn right into Klipbank Street. Follow this road for 1km, when it becomes Selby road. The entrance is on the right hand side. >From the N1 highway: take Rigel Avenue exit (R50), turn east and follow the road for 2km. At the traffic light turn left into Barnard road. At the first intersection, turn right into Klipbank Street. Follow this road for 1km, when it becomes Selby road. The entrance is on the right hand side. Course Available (Details subject to last minute change) This will be a Score or Rogaine style event. All controls will be on the map and all are optional, with further/ harder to find controls worth more points. 24 Controls will be placed in the area, for a total maximum score of 600 points. A time limit of 40 minutes will be set for the race duration. Technical Details Terrain Rough open land with vehicle tracks and many smaller foot paths, many rocky outcrops and some undergrowth. Much of the area has recently burned, so visibility is excellent. Map 1:6'000 on A4 with 2m contour intervals update in September 2013. Scoring This is a mid-distance Score event. Pre marked maps will be obtained at the start, and as many as possible controls are to be obtained within the given time limit. For every minute or part thereof that the racer returns after the cut-off time, 10 points will be forfeit. The racer with the highest score and the lowest time will be declared victorious. The electronic punching and timing system (EMIT) will be used to provide for accurate split and finishing times, as well easy punching.
