Afair, this paper is all about the ring3 --> ring0 escalation, wich is
not directly tied to khorben's issue.
You'll need root permissions to use iopl() (unless you found a bug in
Xorg or some privileged service - iopl permissions are kept via fork etc)
If I were in the situation to read a memory location assuming I have
root privs, I'd simply grep /dev/mem...
