you are right. It is a cups printer detection problem. I had
configured in ~/.cups/client.conf a network printer that is not
reachable from the current network. In the past I also suffered from
the problem thumbnails not being (immediately) generated after program
start up. Now I know why. Configuring another printer, which is in the
current network, the described problem disappeared.
