It's a long time since I played with base curves as I very much like the standard Pentax one I use. However, unless things have changed, you can select *any* basecurve you like, you don't have to choose one that matches your camera so you don't have to use one that is more exaggerated than you want, I think you can do a lot better than just a straight line :-)
