Dear Darktable development team,
I've discovered your software recently and its capabilities blew my mind. Darktable is a solid solid program which features I am still discovering day by day. It is already uber good the way it is and I feel shy suggesting one particular improvement (especially not being a professional programmer myself, just a user happy to have such a professional piece of software for free).

I am a big fan of using the 'color zones' module (in other words, hue-lightness-saturation curves). However, there is one serious drawback when compared to commercial competitors with equivalent tools. Darktable's HSL curves are mathematically the same as used in the 'tone curve' modules. Although they work perfectly well in the latter module, they produce unwanted oscillatory bending in HSL case. Sure one can compensate this by moving closer the other nodes and modifying their strengths accordingly, but this starts to overcomplicate a simple and quick color correction. Plus, one might run out of available nodes for correcting other regions, if needed. Also, the number of nodes is predefined.

So my strong suggestion and desire for the future releases of darktable would be to change the curve system in the 'color zones' module. Another mathematical type of curve that could ensure zero bending in the outlying region, similar to Adobe's Lightroom or Blackmagic's DaVinci Resolve (where upon selecting a particular hue to change, 3 nodes appear, the 'active' central one and two outliers that do not allow the effect to spread beyond), would be the most welcomed change.

Once again - this is not a complaint, I already admire the developers for making such an awesome job in bringing this project so far!

Yours faithfully,
Kristupas Ti
