I don't know about "intended", but... if you observe the actual RGB multipliers 
in the white balance module, you'll see that they don't change. Those are the 
actual meaningful values. The other two are really just for the convenience of 
being able to shift those values relative to each other in certain meaningful 
ways while staying normalized to G=1. So... something about activating the 
picker (it happens if you just click the reset button on that module, too) 
changes the not-very-meaningful interpretation of the RGB values as 
tint/temp... I guess related to working colorspace. That's a little weird, but 
it's best not to get too concerned about keeping those two values "pretty".

FWIW, the RGB values selected by my camera for a given nominal "temperature" 
are never interpreted as the same nominal temperature by darktable.  :-)
