Looks like I may have solved the problem ... ripped everything that I
could find of dt's and did a reinstall. Rather than trying to open
multiple folders at the start I opened each of my folders in turn and
then was able to open multiple folders without any problem.
I did notice that no tags were visible until I closed dt and then
reopened it but that is no big problem.

When I set "ignore jpg on import" I get an error message that the jpg
files can not be found.
I tried to import recursive folders and dt balked with a "re-indexing
658 images" message and simply displayed 20 or so blank frames. The
indexing message does not go away and dt closes 'badly' requiring the
second frame to be closed independently.
I have tried with the indexer both on and off but other than being
able to open 2 very small folders correctly I appear unable to show
more than those few blank frames in any other folder.
I am using the default memory settings.
Help would be appreciated;
