Dear DT users,

I read several mailing list posts about noise reduction (NR), the manual
and watched the DT0.9 screen casts, but I still fail to get good NR results.

I used the following RAW to try the 4 NR methods of DT.
http://www.fastshare.org/download/IMGP3139.DNG

1. RAW-NR works ok, but removes a lot of detail.

2. Non local means (NLM) I found disappointing. The chroma slider at
100% and spot size 1 seems to remove the most chroma noise - which is
still very little! I had to look very closely to see that a bit of
chroma noise is removed at all.

3. The Equalizer with strong NR looks promising, but a lot of chroma
noise remains and an overall "grainy" appearance.

4. The bilateral filter I like the most. (the recommended settings from
johannes [for his Canon with ISO3200] don't work well for my picture)
With a radius of 10 and the rgb sliders at max (0.1000) the color noise
mainly seems to be gone. Unfortunately, a "grainy" appearance which
destroys sharp edges is also there.

Using 4 together with NLM (size 1, strength 75%, luma 100%, chroma again
seems to make no difference) is "the best" I could achieve.

I compared all the results at 1:1 to the Pentax RAW Tool (silkypix based).

I looked mainly at the region between and slightly above the cups and
the pot (to see the white-black transition in the background). The
missing color noise is what I really like.

How do you reduce the color noise of high ISO images with DT? What about
the "grainyness"? Any suggestions?

Cheers,
Michael
