But isn't this too late because the mask already has been drawn?

My experience is this: I click on the pencil icon to draw a mask.
Then, I don't see how wide the brush is. Instead, I have to draw
something in order to see it.  But then I draw masks only to adjust
the brush, and delete them afterwards.

Also, it would be nice if I could stay in brush mode and change the
brush size between strokes.  This way, I could work out the details.
