At <http://wilson.homeunix.com/basecurve/>, I summarise my results
trying to get the base curve of my camera's JPEG engine.  It worked
pretty well I would say.  Granted, I could not model the behaviour
at *very* low values very well.  This may be improved by using
16-bit TIFFs.  Unfortunately, the Python imaging library can only
deal with 8-bit files.  Besides, I set the measured basecurve in DT
by hand, which is inherently inaccurate.
