pushed some experimental code to branch `highlights' in case anyone is
interested. it lacks opencl code (so you'll have to disable opencl to get
the codepath).
it's basically way less aggressive in making stuff white, so you'll get
some (false but plausible) color near clipping. it reconstructs a lot more
detail than the very old version (might be the one in 1.2.2) and takes a
lot longer to go totally white (as compared to current master).
i only tested on one image so far, so it probably looks terrible for most
other cases.
