As you have been told on the gimp list already, all progress in that regard 
only exists in unreleased git code that is heavily under development and not 
meant for productive use. And this only helps with the bit depth. There hasn't 
been any work towards non-destructive editing in gimp, they haven't even 
created a new file format to support that.

You can start to think about this topic again in 1-2 years. Maybe 3.
