Simple parametric mask based on lightness (or whatever masking approach you 
prefer) in your exposure module?

Sounds to me like what you really want to do is raise the gamma rather than 
raise the exposure.  You can do this using either the midpoint in the levels 
plugin or by dragging up a central point in the tone curve, like the graphs 
here:
