This sounds like you should be using grouping:

Set up a group for each pose, and then when the client
pre-selects the poses, you can then expand the group to
select the best shot from the group.
I don't know how filtering works in a group context,
though... can you filter groups based on the star rating
(or whatever) of the representative image? That would
make a good feature, too, if we can't currently do that...
