Something like this should get you going:

git clone https://github.com/dtorop/darktable.git dt-xtrans
cd dt-xtrans
git checkout xtrans2
./build.sh
cd "./build"; sudo make install
/opt/darktable/bin/darktable

You might want to backup your database in ~/.config/darktable before you mess 
with development versions.
