I am not too knowledgeable about printing, but from what I understand Gutenprint is "just" a set of drivers that can be used from CUPS. So in order to - cut down on direct dependencies and - make this useful on OSX I would suggest to only talk to CUPS and leave it to the user to set up Gutenprint drivers there. Or is there some specific need to have the full Gutenprint power available while transforming the files to printer ready raster data? About the actual printing I would expect that we somehow generate the final TIFF (correct size, correct color transformations, ...) and pass that to cupsPrintFile() or one of the similar functions [0].
