Let's try to find out what exactly is going on here.

- Could you give us one XMP file for which that happens? The raw file isn't 
needed, just the XMP.

- Does that also happen when you move away your library.db file first? 
(~/.config/darktable/library.db)

- Do you get any messages on the terminal when you start darktable from that?

- Maybe you could join us in IRC (during European day/afternoon/evening 
times)? That would be on FreeNode in #darktable, easiest would be to use [0].
