Hello to all --

As Darktable matures into a viable and full-featured photo application for
Linux, I would like to gently suggest opening a conversation about changing the
name of the application.  Most of us understand where the name came from - a
merge of 'darkroom' and 'light table', with the best version - "Lightroom"
already taken by Adobe.  Unfortunately, the name doesn't immediately convey
anything about what the program does, except as a play on words related to it's
better known cousin.  The names of most other photography applications, except
where they are tied directly to a company name, are carefully thought out
variations on something to do with 'light', as in the aforementioned
'Lightroom', 'Aperture', and 'Lightzone'.  Not to belabor a point, but to my
mind, 'Darktable' doesn't really call up a mental image if anything except a
broken light table that we used to use for viewing slides.

So, if there are no difficulties with copyright, what about a name that
references the application's open source roots and ethos, as well as one that
gives an immediate feeling for the fantastic flexibility and number of powerful
modules offered by Darktable.  I was thinking of "Image Forge", or perhaps
"Lightforge", or something along those lines.

As an admiring user of Darktable, I nevertheless think that names are
important, and with the cautionary example of GIMP in mind (as in "Why would I
want a crippled clone of Photoshop ???") I hope that some thought might be
given to a name that would help to better market the application.

Best,

-- Darrell
