I haven't tried building against X11 but the other screenshots seem to
match my experience of DT on my mbPro.

The checkerboard pattern at 100% does NOT occur for me with DT 1.4.2
I've checked with several images , no problem.  (checked against all the
display scaling settings, also no checkerboard).

I noticed that RawTherapee (10.7_64_4.1.51) doesn't have issue with the
retina screen, does that use a X11 backend ?
