max cache value would be substantial amount of work. what would be easy is
to limit the resolution of the on-disk thumbnails to smaller mip map
levels. out of the 4GB my complete cache for my 20k images, 2.7G are for
the largest scale, and 856MB are for the next smaller one. the remaining
400somethingMB are pretty reasonable for 20k images i think.

still this is the area where there is still some work to be done (currently
it doesn't even check for full disk before write).

might be a good usecase for this, if compression and decompression speed
are no slower than jpg. i wouldn't consider it a priority.
