In the 1.6 line we disabled automatic searching for cameras at startup since it could block darktable startup until gphoto times out which happened for some people when charging their phones using an USB port. In 1.7 we re-enabled it, using a background job. In 1.6 you have to click on "scan for devices" in the import module of lighttable. > Matthias Tobias
