I have resolved the command line and gexiv2 issue, so things are good to go!
By the way, in darktable, the property is listed as: Xmp.lr.HierarchicalSubject It should be: Xmp.lr.hierarchicalSubject This is in order to be consistant with Lightroom. digikam, exiftool, and now exiv2.
