As of commit a237fa1ff370c77dfbac1f809a5df32148ea5bbc, 'Preserve
history above selected when leaving dr', the behavior of Darktable in
the darkroom is that when you select a new image you're placed on the
*bottom* of the (default) history stack (on 'original'). This leaves
orientation, sharpen, and the base curve unapplied and if you don't
notice and do something to the picture (eg think 'this is too dark,
I'll use exposure to brighten it up'), you lose all of the standard
stack.

 If you explicitly select base curve (the top of the standard stack),
everything works right and Darktable remembers your position in the
history stack if you leave the picture and then return to it.
