Just to add a data point for the worth of a "save as a grayscale" for
masks: look at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4_0mkkSIKo
and see how many times (5? More?) he needed to re-define the mask for
the foreground trees.

generated by another program and use it in DT.
