Just to add a data point for the worth of a "save as a grayscale" for masks: look at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4_0mkkSIKo and see how many times (5? More?) he needed to re-define the mask for the foreground trees.

I do not think that this would solve anything --- applied to different points in the pipeline, that values are defining a different mask. What would be very useful is the ability to export a mask (any mask) as a PNG bitmap (alpha-depth, for example, or better as a grayscale) and import it again whenever a mask is needed.

This would be great also in darktable - Gimp mixed workflows, where you could load the grayscale image as a layer mask, and having exactly the same. Or having an external mask (a distance map for example!) generated by another program and use it in DT.
