first thing to do - obviously - is to import them all.
Then I would stop darktable and run |darktable-generate-cache |from the
terminal
http://www.darktable.org/usermanual/ch01.html.php#darktable_generate_cache_commandline_parameters
and perhaps go to sleep or something as it might take some time to
generate all thumbnails.
With this done darktable should be very fast for your purpose of tagging
all the images.
