mean darktable will read something like the Vuescan DNG files now?

Maybe, not sure. Do you have a sample? The feature was added due to some
scanned DNG, so it's possible.
I'll do provide a sample when I'm back to my office.
Then I'll also try the change and report back.

That being said, scanning into DNG is just plain wrong.
Just scan in TIFF with 3 channels.
as far as I understand what Ed Hamrick is doing the option was added to
enable users of some proprietary software to import scanned images and
process them in their software.
What I am doing: I use Vuescan to scan to TIFF but with all four
channels as I don't want to loose the IR channel data (Vuescan is able
to reprocess from file so you can fiddle around with the dust and
scratch reduction settings later).
I save the scanner RAW data to that file, darktable will import these
files without any issue.
Furthermore I can do dust and scratch even later as I can use the same
.xmp of dt for the reprocessed file again.

Don't want to hijack this thread, maybe just a little bit . Do you
have some tips for scanning with VueScan? I am a bit lost in all the
options that are not very well explained in the documentation.
Especially, I wonder how I can scan and save a negative without
inverting it at the best quality possible (Reflecta CrystalScan 7200).
Is it possible to not apply but save the ICE data?
A short description what I do is found here
http://www.bilddateien.de/fotografie/dunkelkammer-negativ.html#nondest -
whenever there is some spare time around I will add a tutorial for this.
In short: I use the invert functionality of darktable for this.
