Hi all,
As those of us who have ever used Lightroom probably know, LR writes its
.xmp files with the following format:
<filename>.xmp
darktable on the other hand, prefers:
<filename>.<extension>.xmp
So, as an experiment, I grabbed a folder of images from my LR catalogue (a
bunch of Sony .arw RAW files, plus the LR-generated .xmp files), copied it
to a USB key, and dropped it onto my linux system.
I then ran a batch rename on just the .xmp files, to insert ".arw" into the
filename just prior to the extension. This gave me .xmp files in the format
that dt prefers.
When I imported that folder into darktable, all the keywords appeared in
their hierarchical nature (eg: Australia|New South Wales|Sydney) as I
anticipated.
But then last night, I decided to try something else.
I grabbed my external USB 3.0 drive (the backup of my Win7 photos folder),
and copied another folder across to my linux machine. Without doing the
aforementioned rename of the .xmp files, I went ahead and imported the
folder into darktable.
And what I discovered was that darktable imported ALL the keywords that it
found in the .xmp files, BUT IT DID IT TWICE! :) Once, in the hierarchical
fashion, and once in a non-hierarchical fashion.
So, to use the previous example, I ended up with the following keywords
attached to an image:

Australia
Australia|New South Wales|Sydney
New South Wales
Sydney

Is there a simple way to clean this up? Or would you have to go through and
manually remove all redundant keywords? Yes, I do realise you can select
multiple files to remove a keyword from all at once, but it seems you would
have to do this for EACH KEYWORD you wanted to remove. Am I missing
anything?
Cheers,
Bruce Williams
