Hi, 

my 2 cents on that: Gnome 3 has a dialog to select the standard applications 
for mail, web etc, inside the settings. Maybe try that first, in Debian it 
works.

we use xdg-email. this seems to have interesting levels of documentation and 
whatever you do may depend on the desktop environment.. don't know where it 
goes wrong but that should give you a good entry point for a web search 
together with distro/desktop specific search terms.

is it enabled during compilation? generic advise: you can't go back from git to 
a released version, the downgrade of history stacks doesn't work.
