I was deleting the images from DT. It just took a long time. They are
stored on a router's USB and it took 4h to delete them (~4000 images). I
am used to it and don't pay much attention but my daughter was around.
This is why I was curious if it can be customized.

- To avoid the problem in the future: delete images from within darktable.
- To fix it: remove and re-import the whole film roll/folder. There's
also a script to prune the database, removing references to files that
no longer exist.
