Roman has it right, the docs were correct I just wasn't aware (when I read the docs the first time) that there's a "simple text" SVG built-in that will respect them.
Also, the variable structure is different than with the file import/export formats, so I tripped on that. THANK YOU ALL FOR THE HELP!
