Answering my own question ...
Of course, it's left click that used to define control points for the
'path' shape. And the pen doesn't do left click. It does work with the
brush, circle and ellipse shapes, although I don't see any way to alter
sizes without a keyboard or mouse wheel.
My tentative conclusion is that the Microsoft Surface pen is only of
marginal use with darktable. I'd be happy for someone to point out why
I'm wrong!
Back to a conventional mouse.
