For starters, you CAN bring all your development work across from Lightroom.
I wrote a blog post about it here:

I did originally plan to write a follow up piece, but never got around to
it.
There is one thing I've noticed though, which is not mentioned in that blog
post.
If you see thumbnails in darktable which are completely black, check to see
if you applied a Tone Curve in LR. That one partiuclar module does not seem
to always translate well (or at least, it hasn't in my experience).
If you followed the steps in my blog post, and you've imported your images
to darktable, and you see those black thumbnails, pull up the History
panel. It will show you the steps that were performed in Lightroom. Simply
jump back to the history state PRIOR to the Tone Curve, and your image will
magically reappear!
