I know very little about the working of the *buntu clan, sorry.  darix
provides builds for 16.05 and 17.10 in OBS, see:
  https://www.darktable.org/install/#3rdparty

the comparable package to mine is "snapshots from the master branch"

I would suggest irc, #darktable and/or #pixls.us.  
the dev's are there frequently and other knowledgable people and I know
some use *buntu
