I was never before able to really get my head around this rather complex looking module but equating it to the levels function (with RGB control) now appears to make perfect sense and I can much better pre-visualize the final effect. Thanks

Ah, okay.  It's actually in the textual description [1] of “color
balance”:

     The way to best envision the module's way of working is if you

     left axis intercept […] The gamma parameter modifies the line
     shape […] the gain parameter defines the steepness of the curve.

If I may propose a feature request: I really like the interface of a
tone curve.  But maybe that's not appropriate...
