In my case, the problem was a stale PPA. During the upgrade process,
Ubuntu disables the PPAs, but they are not re-enabled at the end. I had
the old binaries for 16.04 installed. So I
1) removed darkatable
2) removed and re-added the PPA
3) installed darktable again
and the problem was solved.
