because it shows in the screenshots that Sony's updated is actually a
program that has a GUI and updates the camera from the GUI, rather than
from the SD card.

Though I like the innovations of Sony cameras, their business practice
is irksome (rootkits, hard to buy their music online, removing Linux
support from the PS3, etc.)

Well, to the OP, let us know how the update goes, most likely you'll
have to find a OS X or Windows machine.
