Afaik, if Digikam changes the XMP, Darktable can detect that and proposes to reload the sidecar *on startup*. At least captions and titles are read from the Digikam sidecars. To my knowledge, for Digikam, you'd have to do an explicit reread of the metadata. And there's a difference in the way the two programs handle the colour markers: digikam allows at most one per image at any given time, darktable allows any number. Note that I don't use Darktabel for tagging etc., only for editing, classification, sorting, tagging etc. is all done in Digikam.
