Thanks very much for the pointer. As it turns out, I had two versions of lensfun on my Ubuntu system: the distro version and a newer version that I compiled from source.
The lensfun-update-data program reported a socket error for me. Editing the file lensfun-update-file to remove a line that referenced "sourceforge" solved the problem.
