Hi,

TLDR: Please do not scroll with film strip when displaying a photo.
Keep the selection consistent with where my cursor is.

I am trying to move away from Aperture and there are couple of pain
points for me. One of the most visible is the inconsistency in how the
film roll behaves in darktable mode:

- Double click selects and displays an image (arguably one click too many...)
- Single click selects but does not display an image
- Spacebar moves to the next image starting with the selected one (NOT
the displayed one)
- Mouse hovering over filmstrip shows only the selected and pointed to
photos, but not the currently displayed one

Film roll always centers itself when a picture is displayed, but the
mouse does not jump to the same picture. This means if I click one
more time I will select a different image than I actually wanted,
because the picture under my cursor changed.

The combination of those is extremely user unfriendly when processing
a large amount of pictures taken.

I am usually comparing multiple versions of a single shot and need to
switch between them back and forth many times. But the UI requires a
lot of clicks and the roll is constantly jumping around. This makes it
hard to return to the previous selection in the middle of almost
identical shots.

There was a request to allow for a single click selection, but sadly
it went nowhere [1]. There are also workarounds (colors, stars) for
keeping the shortlist visible, but it is just not comfortable. There
is also no way to display two shots side by side for comparison
(except in the master branch [2]).

As an opensource developer myself I know how hard it can be to
implement random features people are requesting. But this would bite
anyone moving from mainstream commercial products. Single click is
used to select active photo in all products I have used over time
(Bibble Pro, Aperture). Lightroom seems to behave the same according
to docs [3]. Is there a reason selection is not tied to display? Some
use case I am not aware of?
