Renaming images within the database is now supported through the Lua API [1]
<https://github.com/darktable-org/darktable/pull/2082>. Adding support for
it in the GUI will require some further design decisions; I opened a
request-for-comment earlier this year [2]
<https://github.com/darktable-org/darktable/issues/2247> but it did not
seem that anyone had any opinions on the subject.
