it all depends on what distro you are running as they utilize different
package managers.  There was discussion recently about libraries being
installed in unexpected locations, but I don't recall the particulars. 
fwiw: I run openSUSE Tumbleweed and have not experienced the problems that
I recall.

to install the scripts themselves and not the entire lua framework, 
  https://github.com/darktable-org/lua-scripts
lists the available scripts and explains installation and configuration.
