I was not sure if I wanted to comment on the release of DT 3, but I will
do it anyway because I have been using it for the last two years
extensively and currently have 154.000 images in the database, so I have
some experience with it. I have not used DT 3 yet, but read the
changelog with all the changes and new features.
First of all, I'm a freelance photographer/webdesigner and a dedicated
Linux user and love DT. It's wonderful and a joy to use and with each
version it gets better and better and I'm always excited to read about
new developments. And yet I just bought a Windows pc so that I can use
Lightroom..... (I chose LR over Capture One)
The reason is that after having edited lots of images I was never really
satisfied with the overall color, skin tones, sharpness, detail,
highlight recovery and noise reduction. And in the end that's what the
final result is all about. So just for testing purposes I started to use
LR and Capture One trial versions within a Virtualbox environment. The
result was that all these things were better and accomplished in a much
shorter time, almost instantaneously. Even after fiddling with all the
modules for a long long time, I could never quite get the same result in DT.
I'm not saying that DT is inferior, absolutely not!!! I like it more
than LR, but comparing images I have to conclude something is missing
that makes the overall quality of images in LR still better.
I hope I did not write this too soon and bought that Windows pc too soon
and have regrets after actually installing and using DT 3 ones it's
available ;). But then I can always convert that new and much faster pc
into my new Linux pc and cancel my LR subscription :).
